Turning Everyday Food Packs Into Portals To India’s Freedom Stories
Britannia transformed everyday products into an Augmented Reality storytelling platform where consumers could unlock untold stories from India’s freedom struggle simply by scanning product packs.
Background & Challenge
Reigniting Interest In India’s Freedom Story
Over time, Independence Day celebrations had increasingly become associated with discounts and promotional sales. The deeper stories behind India’s freedom struggle were gradually fading from everyday conversations.
Britannia wanted to change that narrative. As a brand that has grown alongside the nation, it sought to reconnect younger generations with the real voices of the independence movement.
The challenge was to make history engaging for a digital first generation while integrating the experience naturally into everyday consumer behaviour.
The Idea
Offering 1947% More History Instead Of Discounts
Instead of offering traditional Independence Day discounts, Britannia introduced something far more meaningful: 1947% More History.
Using Augmented Reality, everyday Britannia products such as Good Day biscuits, Marie Gold, Milk Bikis and Britannia Breads became gateways to untold stories from the freedom struggle.
By scanning the pack, consumers could unlock immersive storytelling experiences narrated by the freedom fighters who had lived through those historic moments.
Strategy
Bringing History Into Millions Of Homes
Britannia products are present in homes across the country, making them powerful everyday touchpoints.
The campaign leveraged this reach by embedding historical storytelling directly into the brand’s product ecosystem. Instead of expecting audiences to search for history, the campaign brought it directly into their daily routines.
This allowed the campaign to transform a simple snack moment into a meaningful cultural experience.
Execution & Technology
AR Storytelling Across 250 Britannia Products
Augmented Reality technology was deployed across 250 Britannia SKUs, effectively turning the brand’s product portfolio into a nationwide storytelling network.
Consumers could simply scan the pack to unlock immersive AR experiences on their phones.
The stories were narrated by five living freedom fighters:
Leelatai Chitale Lt. R. Madhavan Gour Hari Das Lt. Bharati Asha Sahay Lakshmi Krishnan
A dedicated digital platform hosted extended experiences and additional historical content.
